A few weeks ago we released an episode on the fundamentals of gRPC. And while programmatic interfaces are excellent tools for network automation, often that is only the beginning of the story. That’s no exception with gRPC. In this episode we continue down the path of that gRPC conversation and into gNMI, a standards based approached to programmatic interaction with network devices utilizing gRPC. We discuss what it is, how it works, and where it stands in today’s fast moving environment.

In this episode we will discuss the idea of SD-WAN vs. Application Acceleration and WANop.  With the proliferation of SD-WAN we’ve heard a lot of people say that SD-WAN gives you the traffic control, but does it negate the need for application acceleration or WAN optimization tools?  We attack this common misconception and discuss our stance on the matter in this episode.

As the world of network automation continues to evolve, we are seeing different options emerge in how we programmatically interface with our devices. In this episode we take a look at one of the newest and more interesting methods, gRPC. gRPC was developed by Google as a way to execute remote procedure calls in the orchestration of their system and includes such concepts as Protocol Buffers, authentication, bidirectional streaming, and flow control. Join us as we dive into how gRPC works, why it’s different than what you may already know, and why you may want to look into using it to orchestrate your infrastructure.

In looking back on 2020 we think about all of the things we did to keep ourselves busy.

Some of us starting baking bread at home, some started home gardens, and if you are part of the networking twitter community you probably saw a lot of folks chasing some new certifications.

Throughout 2020, with isolation and the pandemic in full swing, networking vendors and certification facilitators found ways to serve the community by providing remote exams and free trainings.

Whether it was the need to stay busy or trying to learn something new, whatever your reason is to pursue a new certification, the question is which one?

With 2020 now behind us and our future constantly changing, which certifications will give you the biggest impact for 2021 and beyond?

In today’s episode we talk to 2 prominent networking influencers:

  • Ernest the “Cisco Panther” and
  • Yasmin Lara the “mom who can fix anything”

We’ll go over topics covering

  • their certification journey
  • how it’s positioned them to continue growth throughout the pandemic and
  • which certifications give you the best bang for your buck for 2021 and beyond.

Networking is one of the industries where every time a good idea comes around it doesn’t take long for that idea to get coopted and turned into something to sell products, often drastically changing the intent of the original idea. Today we’re going to try to roll back the clock a bit and discuss the original idea around Intent Based Networking. What is it? What does it mean for you? And how do products fit into the original intent.

In this episode we (Brandon, Phil, and Vince) introduce ourselves and share what drives our passion for network visibility and performance.  While we are all from Riverbed, this is not your typical vendor podcast.  We have a lot planned to discuss around why visibility is a key that networks must focus on today.  We talk about cloud and what that overused blanket term really means to us, and how migrations to the cloud are a key time to ensure that we have visibility into apps that have been forgotten, where our data is, what’s leaving the cloud, and what the performance looks like, before, during, and after. We touch on Security, AI/ML, and performance as well, as we setup shop and plan to discuss these areas in further detail.

In today’s episode we’re talking about IPv6. More specifically, we discuss what it takes to run an IPv6 only network. Why now? And why not dual stack? Well, in the middle of November (2019), the US government put out a memo outlining their updated guidelines and expectations for IPv6. In it, they mandate a future vision of 80% of devices connected to IPv6 only networks by 2025. That’s not that far away. So, as many of our peers who work in US federal organizations are preparing for a world that is IPv6 only, we figured it might be time for us to do the same.

  • Benefits of running an IPv6-only network
  • IPv6 has the potential to perform better than IPv4
  • Prevailing recommendation for IPv6 adoption has been dual stack. This memo mandates IPv6 only network adoption. What are some of the additional considerations that need to be considered when jumping straight from IPv4 to IPv6.
  • What is the current state of IPv6 networking hardware today?

All you have to do is take a look around you and it becomes obvious that people just simply don’t like change. Conversely, all you have to do is look around you and it becomes obvious that our industry is in almost a constant state of change. How do we reconcile these things? How can we adapt to the ever changing world around us, and how can we utilize this knowledge to be more effective influencers of change within our organizations and within our jobs.

Now this topic, like many of the topics that have become episodes on Network Collective lately, was prompted by a conversation in the Network Collective Slack. It has an IPv6 bend to it, as IPv6 seems to be the change the industry continually likes to avoid, but the avoidance of change isn’t something new. Nick, I’m going to start with you. A conversation in the Network Collective Slack prompted some conversation about how to build a network. No, not the packet switched networks that we’re all so familiar with, but rather a personal network of peers. Not everyone has the privilege to attend trade shows and conferences throughout the year, and all of us have lacked that privilege for a while now due to Covid, so how does one build a pervasive network without in-person events. We also discuss some methods to set yourself apart from the crowd in ways that don’t include peer relationships.

From working in unbelievable environments to dealing with unexpected bugs, the longer that you do networking for a career the more likely it is that you have a story or two from the trenches to share. Listening to other’s adventures can serve both as a cathartic release and as a warning for roads to leave untraveled. In today’s episode we talk with some experienced engineers about their stories. If nothing else, you as the listener can have some laughs at our expense. Enjoy!

Every few years the industry takes a significant step towards a more holistic and capable security model. At the beginning, everything and everyone was trusted, and for good reason. You knew every operator and every machine that was connected to the network. But as networks have become ubiquitous, that level of trust is simply unreasonable. So we’ve built firewalls, and differing levels of inspection, but all of these tools still allow for some implicit level of trust between a machine and those machines closest to them. That is changing and that is what we’re here to talk about today. The newest trend in security is the concept of zero trust, and while it’s suffering the common plight of any new trend with multiple vendors trying to shape the definition, removing implicit trust in our networks is the next logical step towards a truly secure infrastructure.

The packet capture is the one tool in the network engineer’s pocket that doesn’t lie. Or does it? In this episode we talk about the fundamental components of packet captures and how to use them effectively in troubleshooting and managing your network.

It’s also time for the NetDevOps survey. Whether you’re someone who utilizes automation as a fundamental tool of your network or someone who is just thinking about starting an automation journey, your input is needed. Please take a few minutes to fill out the NetDevOps Survey.

The long standing tradition of having a secure network perimeter and a lightly protected interior has been going by the wayside for quite some time now. But the introduction of new models of connectivity are forcing us to change the way we look at security all together and invent whole new models for protecting our networks. In today’s episode we’re going to be exploring how these changes are impacting security and talk about some of these new models that meet the needs of modern networks.

Open source continues to accelerate in the network domain with projects such as Netmiko, NAPALM, and Nornir–all of which are led by individuals, not large organizations or venture-backed startups.  In this episode we sit down with Tony Nealon, creator of Netpalm. Netpalm is a network API platform that can abstract and render structured data, both inbound and outbound, to your network device’s native telnet, SSH, NETCONF or RESTCONF interface–leveraging popular libraries like NAPALM, Netmiko, and ncclient under the hood for network device communication

I think we’ve all been there. The network is down, you’ve tried all the things that you know how to do, and now it’s time to call vendor support to figure out what the heck is going on with your network. Some of us dread this situation as navigating the support process can be daunting at times. We’re hoping to give you some tips in today’s episode to make that process go a little smoother. Listen in as we talk about our experiences with vendor support and what we’ve learned along the way to make the support process as painless as possible.

SD-WAN has been one of the most hyped technologies in a long time but as the hype settles out and real world deployments start to take shape, the picture is becoming clearer on what SD-WAN is and is not. In this episode we take a look at the original promises, where we are today in relation to those promises, and what SD-WAN might look like in the years to come.

Networking Conferences play a big role in many of our professional lives and Cisco Live is the biggest one when it comes to networking. This year being what it is, we’re seeing our favorite in person events being transformed into virtual, online-only events. Considering how much community can play a role in how these events make an impact, we figured we would wax nostalgic on past events, share some favorite memories, and explore how this one event came to be significant for so many of us.

Rather than a single continuous conversation made up of a group of talking heads, we’ve recorded this episode in segments. Each one focusing on one person’s experiences with the conference. Also, due to the length, we’ve split this episode into two parts. This is part 2. Part 1 should also be available in your podcatcher, or if you’re listening to this on our website you can find part 1 here.

The network automation community is continuously expanding and evolving. This can make it challenging to get a feel for where you are at on the automation journey. To shed some light on the current state of network automation, the NetDevOps survey was created. It’s an independent survey of network practitioners that collects information about the state of NetDevOps in the real world. As you might expect, it reveals some interesting trends within the community. In this episode we speak with the organizers of the NetDevOps survey to discuss how it came to be and some of the interesting results from the 2019 report.

I always enjoy an opportunity to talk about the ins and outs of what it’s like to do networking in industries that don’t follow the typical enterprise models. In today’s episode we’re doing just that. Brian Martin, from the Twitch network engineering team, is joining us to talk about what it’s like to run a network where the primary product is real-time streaming video. If you, like me, are interested in hearing what it takes to make a service like Twitch run, this episode is for you.

We find ourselves recording this in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic and I have to be honest that it’s been a bit challenging finding motivation to talk about networking when there’s so many other important things on people’s minds. I mean, who really cares about networking at a time like this? But as I started thinking about that very question the reality hit me, it’s everyone. Everyone cares about networking at a time like this because everyone, young and old, is using technology, networking, and specifically the Internet to hold on to whatever normalcy they can in these crazy times. The fact is that networking, and other core infrastructure skill sets have never been more important than they are right now. The real question I was challenged with wasn’t who cares about networking at a time like this, it’s who cares about a networking podcast at a time like this. I imagine some do, and some don’t, but we’re going to take today’s episode a bit lightly and just talk about what’s top of mind. We hope you’ll listen along.

Technology is only a small piece of the automation puzzle and automation efforts often require adjustments or updates to the ways companies do their day to day work. Today we’re continuing our focus on Network Automation and Programmability by talking about Navigating Enterprise Process during automation projects.

Cisco leads the industry when it comes to respected and valued IT infrastructure certification paths and last month Cisco made some significant changes to the way they do certifications. In today’s episode we discuss some of these changes and what the implications are for those of us pursuing new Cisco certifications or maintaining the certifications we already hold.

It’s not illogical to argue that since we all use the same networking technologies that all networks are essentially the same. Routing protocols, layer two technologies, and overlays all behave the same whether they are run in SOHO, enterprise, or service provider environments. That being said, it feels like there can be worlds of difference between the application of these technologies in different environments. In this episode Nick Buraglio, Kevin Myers, and I discuss just how interchangeable these technologies are and why it feels like engineers who work on the same technologies can feel worlds apart when their paths intersect.

At different points in our careers it can be difficult to ask for help. Maybe the expectation is that your customer is paying for expertise and you have to demonstrate it. Maybe it’s just embarrassing to admit when you don’t know something. Nobody can know it all though, so knowing when and how to ask for help will save you trouble and pain in your career. As the networking world continues to embrace automation and orchestration, some of the terms used to explain this new way of doing things remain a little fuzzy. In today’s episode we’re going to look specifically at Infrastructure as Code and by the end we hope to define what it is as well as what it is not, provide some relevant examples of it in action, and clear up as much confusion as possible about what it means to network engineers.

There’s always something to learn from other people’s stories so we’re making it a point to spend time talking about past experiences and lessons learned. In this first foray into this format, Nick Russo joins us to talk about a formative leadership experience that happened early in his career and changed his perspective on what leadership and failure looked like.

Today we’re introducing a new twist to the Network Collective Short Take, the community spotlight. One of the reoccurring themes in the listener survey was that you get to hear a lot about what our guests know but don’t get to know anything about them or how they came to have the knowledge that they do. This is an easy problem to fix so occasionally we’ll be profiling individuals in the industry who are doing good work. Today, that individual is Nick Russo. Nick has been a long time contributor to Network Collective and has participated in some of our most popular episodes. Listen in as we talk about how Nick Russo got his start in networking and how his journey brought him to where he is today.

Tunnels and overlays are all the rage in software-defined networking but 128 Technology thinks there is a better way forward. Without tunnels or overlays, 128 can provide all the features you’ve come to expect from an SD-WAN solution and more. Listen in if you would like to hear how they can do all of this without encapsulation, offering far smaller overhead yet still keeping your data secure in transit. Once you’ve watched the overview here, you can find an even deeper dive into their technology at their website https://128technology.com or you can view the full day Networking Field Day Exclusive event recordings at http://tnc.li/128tech

Cloudflare come out strong, pointing the finger at Verizon for shoddy practices putting the Internet at risk. It didn’t take long for karma to come around and for Cloudflare to have their own Internet impacting outage from a mistake of their own. In this episode we talk about that outage, the risk of centralization on the Internet, managing MSPs when trouble strikes, and whether or not agile processes are forgoing security in favor of faster releases.

The initial hype of SD-WAN claimed that MPLS was dead as SD-WAN was going to remove all need for SLA based circuits. Now that we’re several years in and have some experience under our collective belts, we take a look at whether or not the original hype was correct and what real world customers are doing when it comes to selecting circuits for their SD-WAN networks.
